Airkix Milton Keynes

MKWeb's experience
MKWeb boldly went where no website had gone before - for an extended flight at Airkix! Read on to find out what happened.

Milton Keynes Sport - Flying at Airkix Milton KeynesA friendly warm welcome awaited us at the front desk, there was some paperwork to fill in and away we went. Our instructor, Kermut, welcomed us into the training room. Here we saw a short video detailing what we were about to experience. Then it was on to more specific instructions about body position and handsignals (as it is too noisy in the tunnel for anyone to talk). We were each asked to climb up on a bench so our instructor could get us into the freefall position

Getting kitted up was next. Knee and elbow pads, flying suit, goggles and helmets and earplugs are all supplied. All jewellery, watches, glasses etc must be stored in a locker so best to leave these at home. Also wear comfortable casual clothing and trainers.

Then it was up to the wind tunnel for the flight of our lives. A safety bell sounded as we all filtered into the chamber and the doors were sealed. Then it was time to fly one by one.

Milton Keynes Sport - Flying at Airkix Milton KeynesThe wind was roaring as I stepped forward into the chamber. Arms tucked in towards my body, my instructor steadied me as I fell forward into the wind and wow what a strong wind that was. The current is regulated according to your size and body weight so as a beginner you can fly easily on your stomach.

It was quite difficult to get the correct body shape as you are constantly steadying yourself against the wind. My instructor was beside me the whole time giving directions via handsignals. Photos are also taken to mark the moment so a cheery smile is essential. All too soon I was out , flights are one minute at a time. Then my colleagues took to the chamber each experiencing their flights in a different way as you can see by the photos.

A second one minute flight is part of the package. By then you are getting the idea and are keen to fly unassisted.

How was the experience? I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different and new. A first it was a very strange and unfamiliar feeling for the body. Something like one of those dreams you have when you are free falling. That special moment when you free fly is indescribable.

The Dream of Human Flight Becomes Reality
with Airkix

No parachute required; Airkix presents the ultimate freefall experience. Visitors can feel the exhilaration of unlimited freefall without even boarding a plane or leaving the building simply flying in a column of air. To book your flight visit www.airkix.com or call 0845 331 6549.

The Experience
Airkix unveiled its first UK wind tunnel at the Xscape Leisure and Entertainment Centre in Milton Keynes. It has quickly become one of the most invigorating leisure pursuits, the vertical wind tunnel enables people of all ages to feel the adrenalin of freefall in a controlled, safe environment. In the purpose built tunnel you can perform a series of freefall manoeuvres in an airstream of up to 150mph.

The Tunnel
The impressive structure has been designed and built specifically for indoor skydiving and bodyflying. The tunnel employs state of the art technology which accurately controls the environment inside the tunnel. The four high performance 250HP fans generate controlled airflow and a windspeed of up to 150mph, replicating the conditions that skydivers thrive on. The indoor flight chamber has a diameter of 12 feet and is 35 feet high providing enough room for up to four experienced people to fly together.

The Flyers
Not just for adrenalin junkies, the major appeal of Airkix is that anyone can have a go. From first time thrill seekers to more experienced skydivers wanting to perfect their technique or those wanting to try something different, the Airkix wind tunnel is for everyone. In fact children from the age of 5 enjoy and excel in the wind tunnel.

The advantage of the wind tunnel is that it combines the heart pumping elements of an extreme sport but in a controlled and safe environment. Unlike other extreme sports Airkix doesn't require any previous experience or sporting ability and people can be flying within minutes of arriving.

All flyers visiting Airkix receive induction training in a pre-flight room from highly qualified instructors. Flyers are taken on a step by step programme, explaining how the wind tunnel works and how to get the most out of their flight. All flyers are provided with the latest equipment including flying suits, goggles and helmets.

To prove to friends that you have actually flown, the Airkix tunnel has cameras enabling DVD recordings and pictures to be taken while in-flight.

The Expertise
The finest instructors in the country make up the 'Aircrew'. Prior to coaching in the tunnel, all instructors receive rigorous training lasting four weeks and are qualified by experts at the International Bodyflight Association in USA. The training is carried out at SkyVenture, the manufacturers of the Airkix facility and operators of SkyVenture in Orlando, Florida. The Aircrew maximise the enjoyment of flights, give flyers confidence and help them to develop new skills whilst in the flight chamber.

The Airkix experience starts at just £34.99 for the Kix-start package (off-peak) which lasts an hour and includes two flights. (The equivalent of three skydives all at once!). To book your flight go to: www.airkix.com or call 0845 331 6549
