The city centre of Milton Keynes is dominated by thecentre:mk, Europe's longest shopping centres offering high street stores and smaller, specialist shops. See its location on the city map.

Shopping in Milton Keynes - HMV shopA glass construction about a half mile in length, it is one of the longest under-cover shopping areas in Europe, incorporating over 230 shops from large national stores to smaller specialist shops. It attracts nearly 30 million visits a year. Within the shopping building there are a number of specialist barrows selling a wide variety of distinctive goods and four days a week there is an open market alongside the building. Being built on ground level with automatically-opening doors and with ample parking around the building, it is also very popular with visitors with disabilities.

In May 2008 a planning application was submitted to revitalise the Queens court. The £10m proposal will give a more welcoming, contemporary environment.

The centre also houses Middleton Hall which plays host to exhibitions, fairs and displays throughout the year.

On the southern side of the building there is an open market on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and an antiques and bric-à-brac market on Thursdays.

Adjacent to thecentre:mk is the Food Centre which houses two supermarkets, a freezer centre and a range of small specialist shops such as Oddbins Wines, Penine Way, an outdoor store and Whittards Coffee Shop.

A trip to thecentre:mk, takes the stress out of shopping, as you can make all your purchases under one roof. The Centre is open seven days a week, and every weekday until 8pm with extended hours at Christmas time. The Centre provides the discerning shopper with over 200 retail outlets which range from department stores to smaller, specialist stalls and shops. Interesting gift ideas are on display in the 28 barrows which provide crafts and specialist foods which are not in the shops. Marks and Spencers now have a third floor which makes it the largest in the region. It has a bakery and a delicatessan and now has a coffee shop. It is the Centre's joint anchor tenant, in addition to the John Lewis Partnership.

Restaurants and cafe's, fountains and street entertainment, together with a weekly programme of events culminating in a spectacular Christmas display, all help to create the fabulous atmosphere for which thecentre:mk is renowned.

Middleton Hall provides a venue for an array of events, including the hugely popular Wedding Fayres, Art displays and Leisure and lifestyle exhibitions. It also benefits from many of the expertly crafted seasonal displays, decorations and entertainments.

Parking at thecentre:mk is easy, with 16,000 spaces, all within a short walk of the shops. Special provisions are made for disabled visitors, and mother and baby parking spaces are also available. All parking is free after 6pm.

Shopping in Milton Keynes - John Lewis ShopWith more than 21 food outlets within thecentre:mk , you can get fast food at the big names - McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut - or enjoy a more relaxing meal at Wagamama's in the West end or Let's Eat near Middleton Hall. There are also restaurants to be found within the Centre's department stores, including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and House of Fraser. For a really tasty and different dessert try an ice-cream, frozen yoghurt or fruit smoothie from one of the speciality barrows.


Shopping in Milton Keynes - Christmas Market Outside thecentre:mk itself, is the perfect opportunity for bargain hunting at the outdoor market in Market Square, open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Thursdays there is even a special bric-a-brac market.
