Overview and Scrutiny

The External Scrutiny Panel held a special meeting on 21 July 2008 to consider the Post Office proposals to close 6 branches in Milton Keynes. The final report of that meeting has now been published.

Part of the work of the Council's Scrutiny process is to set up small review groups that investigate specific topics in greater detail. These review groups provide an opportunity for Members to meet with members of the public and expert witnesses and over a period of time produce a report of their findings.

Recently added the final report of the Arts and Heritage Strategies Review Group.

Many of the decisions made by the Council are taken by a small group of Councillors known as the Cabinet or by senior council officers. Overview and Scrutiny is the process by which these people are held to account for the decisions they make and how the performance of the Council is monitored. The Overview and Scrutiny (O&S) function is currently divided into a series of Scrutiny Committees and Panels and Policy Development Committees. There is also an Executive Scrutiny Panel which meets to consider all called-in Cabinet, individual Cabinet member or officer decisions. Each of the O&S Committees and Panels will develop an annual work programme which outlines the key issues that Members will cover throughout the course of the year.

Each year the Scrutiny Panels and Policy Development Committees produce a joint annual report. This provides an opportunity for Members to look back on the work they have done.
