Strongest year-on-year rise in retail footfall for over 5 years, says Synovate

The Synovate Retail Traffic Index (RTI) figures for April 2009, released today, show the strongest year-on-year rise in retail footfall for over 5 years, since February 2004. Retail footfall levels were up markedly by 4.4% on April 2008 and up by 7.6% month-on-month against March 2009. Synovate retail psychologist Dr Tim Denison tempered the good news somewhat, “Whilst we are delighted with the healthy year on year and month on month uplifts, we would be ill-advised to see the figures as sure signs of the long-awaited ‘green shoots of recovery'.

Shop vacancy problem is misunderstood, says KPMG/Synovate Retail Think Tank

A new report from the KPMG/Synovate Retail Think Tank (RTT) has found that recessionary effects on retail are being largely misunderstood and one key effect is simply a speeding up of the inevitable decline of tertiary shop property. Even in buoyant economic periods, vacancy levels in traditional retail properties have remained stubbornly high, usually hovering at 10% or so. Some of this vacant property is effectively obsolete for shopping purposes and the recessionary shakeout is accelerating the growth of property obsolescence.
