Wal-Mart opened their largest ever UK hypermarket in Milton Keynes in November 2005. The store is called an ASDA Wal-Mart Supercentre, emulating the brand that has been successful in the United States as Wal-Mart and ASDA fight to increase the company's share of the ever competitive retail market.
"The Supercentre has been Wal-Mart's main vehicle for growth over the last ten years in the USA," said Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of international food and grocery think tank, IGD. "The company has followed a strategy of converting non-food discount stores into Supercentres selling grocery as well as other products.
"In the UK the situation is reversed as ASDA looks to increase sales of product lines like electrical goods, clothing and homeware to grow their total retail market share."
Wal-Mart is particularly good at sharing ideas and processes across its range of stores throughout the world. During 2005 in the USA, for example, the company began importing clothing and furnishing best practice from ASDA in the UK. Industry analysts will be looking to see how the new Milton Keynes Supercentre compares to its counterparts in the States.
"Wal-Mart has been very successful at acquiring companies around the world that are already good at what they are doing and fit nicely within the Wal-Mart family," continued Joanne Denney-Finch. "ASDA met this need with its strong management team and 'Every Day Low Price' philosophy. The company is sure to continue growing over the coming years all over the world."
