Areas of Milton Keynes

The name Pennyland was derived from an old field name. The streets are named after old coins, such as Florin Drive and Shilling Close. The whole area is built in gentle curves and from the air forms a circle like a coin. It sits in a delightful position right next to the Grand Union Canal and about five minutes by car from the city centre. Willen lake is about a 15 minute walk away.

It was begun in 1977 with rental housing which featured an experimental passive solar energy scheme. They were monitored by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation and the Open University and provided useful information when planning other schemes such as energy world. The area now has a selection of housing including self builds, rental and sheltered housing for the elderly. Adjacent to the canal is the Moorings. Wayland Tunley, the builders, won an architectural competition with their vision. A lagoon was constructed adjacent to the canal and 42 dwellings ranging from 2 to 4 bedrooms were built around it. Moorings were supplied for boats and there were contrasting hard and soft waterfronts.
