Loughton Valley Linear Park runs through the centre of the Parish. The Linear Park follows the course of Loughton Brook which runs through Loughton joining Lodge Lake in the north of the Parish to the Tear Drop Lakes in the south.

There are three residential areas in Loughton Parish: Loughton, Great Holm and Loughton Lodge.

Loughton (approx. 1,000 dwellings old and new) was originally two villages (Loughton and Little Loughton) dating back to the time of the Doomsday Book. The centre of the village around the church and the Green is a conservation area and new development in Loughton has been mainly confined to the edges of the original village.

There are three schools in Loughton: Loughton Manor First School, Loughton Middle School and The Grove, an independent junior and nursery school. There is also a private day nursery. Older children are served by Denbigh School in neighbouring Shenley Church End. Visit the Education pages for more details

There are two pubs at either end of London Road: The Talbot (an old coaching inn) and the Harvester both with restaurants. There is a Sports and Social Club with a Sports Ground used for football and cricket. The allotments in the NW corner of the grid square serve both Loughton and Great Holm. There is also an equestrian centre in the centre of the village.

Besides the old village church of All Saints (now ecumenical) there is a Baptist Chapel. See our religion area for more details.

There is a small local store in London Road and adjacent to Loughton in neighbouring Shenley Church End there is a local centre with a number of shops including chemist/post office, bakers, supermarket, Chinese restaurant and hairdressers. There is also a leisure centre and swimming pool next to the local centre and another pub/hotel/restaurant the Shenley Inn.

Great Holm is a completely new development where building began in 1982. Its name comes from an old field name and the streets are named after historic houses and royal residences eg Attingham Place, Edgecote. The elevated areas enjoy views over Loughton Lodge Lake.

There was an emphasis on quality private development and there were some self build plots. Petworth, Highgrove Hill and Kensington Drive are homes to the 8 shared ownership developments.

A Bovis development in the north east has its own sports and community complex - swimming pool, solarium, tennis courts, recreation area, multi purpose hall.

It has one school, Holmwood First School. Middle School children go to either neighbouring Loughton or Two Mile Ash. Education Guide gives further details

There is a pub, The Grebe, on the north side of grid square and a local meeting place in the centre which is used by a number of organisations including a play group. There is a small park area and a number of children's play areas.

Fronting Lodge Lake is a Chinese restaurant. Great Holm is also in easy distance of the local centre at Shenley Church End.

The MacIntyre project in the south west corner of Great Holm runs a small garden centre and bakers/coffee shop.

A medical centre is situated on the north side of Gt Holm.

Loughton Lodge is separated from Great Holm by Lodge Lake where members of the local angling club fish. Loughton Lodge consists of a small exclusive development of 33 flats, a girl guide outdoor centre and the National Badminton Centre which now couexists with a health club.
