MK Dons boss Karl Robinson admits Dele Alli can do little wrong after the teenager struck a thunderbolt to help his side beat Coventry and catch up in the League One play-offs race.

Substitute Izale McLeod scored the winner after Coventry skipper Carl Baker had cancelled out 17-year-old Alli’s sensational volley.

The Sky Blues nearly took a share of the spoils when Antony Kay brought down Callum Wilson, but Dons keeper David Martin superbly kept out Baker’s spot kick.

And Robinson has backed Alli to keep making headlines – before admitting his team are back in with a shout for promotion, three points behind sixth-place Peterborough who do have a game in hand.

“It’s an absolute wonder goal,” said Robinson. “There won’t be many better goals scored by a 17-year-old up and down the country this weekend.

“He was fantastic, he covered every single blade of grass on the pitch and his physical components are scary at times.

“However I’m fuming about the penalty, I don’t know why he’s given that, Antony Kay has clearly got the ball.

“It was a really interesting game and we’ve got the three points again which takes us even closer to those play-off places. The see-saw swings back in our favour.”

The Dons started on top as Dean Lewington’s dipping free-kick fell just the wrong side of Joe Murphy’s right-hand post.

Coventry slowly grew into the game and Jordan Spence hacked the ball of the line after Nathan Eccleston fired goalwards.

But Alli’s moment of magic came in the 39th minute, thumping past a fully-stretched Murphy.

Baker drilled Coventry back on to level terms after the break but two substitutes combined for the Dons’ winner, McLeod tucking away a deft lob following Giorgio Rasulo’s pinpoint pass.

And with 20 minutes to go, Martin dived to his right to beat out Baker’s spot kick and Coventry’s last threat.
